Family Business

There have been six generations running the business which still operates from the premises they built in 1865, a semi-detached block at 57 Main Road, Seaton near Workington which includes a home and a workshop. Latterly it expanded with workshops and offices behind the original property.

Where it began

Founder John Sandelands was a key member of the local community, he owned a quarter share in the Seaton Firebrick Company and was a Parish Overseer, looking after the good of the villages. He was a key negotiator with Cleator and Maryport Railway Company which built the railway through the village.

The first three generations running the business were all called John: it was the 3rd generation who bought their first vehicle and employed their first apprentice. John the 3rd has a son called Henry and he joined the company in 1954 after leaving Workington Technical School.

We're still going strong

Henry is still close to the business today, having handed the business over to son Neil. There are now more employees than ever before. Neil's son Steven has been with the company since he left school and like the family generations before him, he too has completed his apprenticeship at John Sandelands.

Modern technology has taken over much of the building and joinery industry; there are few carpentry workshops that still operate on the scale of this West Cumbrian business.
Building a reputation for quality craftsmanship and bespoke joinery services, the company still creates impressive individual pieces including bespoke spiral staircases.

Adapting to market forces the company now also provides building and joinery services to trade and public services. We have also extended our product range to include u PVC windows and doors, which have replaced many of the traditional sash windows we produced over a century ago.
